Treatment of Swine Flu
Swine Flu of mild type can be handled effectively with proper home care measures after following the guidelines given by the local healthcare authorities. The symptoms and signs normally come down within 7 to 10 days time. Other individuals who are in a high risk group (children, older adults, pregnant women and individuals with pre-existing disorders) need immediate medical attention and might require hospitalization.
What is the general treatment for swine flu?
Generally rest is advised for all those with swine flu. Medications for fever, pain, vomiting and diarrhea may be administered. Those who feel tired with recurring vomiting or diarrhea may need to take oral rehydration solutions.
Treatment at the hospital
Individuals with severe symptoms and those who fall under the high risk group need to be hospitalized. Treatment mainly involves the administration of antiviral medications such as Oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu ®) or Zanamivir (brand name Relenza ®) until the symptoms subside. Mechanical support such as the use of ventilators may be required in individuals who develop severe lung infections.
